The announcement of the 2009 class for baseball Hall of Fame should be coming out soon and hopefully Andre Dawson finally gets his ticket to Cooperstown. It is a travesty that Dawson isn't in the Hall already and if he doesn't get in this year, I don't know if he ever will. The only "lock" this year is Rickey Henderson. He should get a vote from every writer but as I learned in this column, there are some pretty stupid people voting for the baseball Hall of Fame.Apparently this moron of a sports writer from Arizona thought that Matt Williams deserve a spot in the Hall, more than Rickey. Here's a quick comparison of the two.
Rickey Henderson
.279 BA .401 OBP 3055 Hits 2295 Runs 297 HR 1406 SB
10 time All-Star, MVP, The Greatest Leadoff hitter in baseball history
Matt Williams
.269 BA .317 OBP 1878 Hits 997 Runs 378 HR
5 time All-Star, 4 Gold Gloves
Back to Dawson. This guy has been ignored for way too long. He was unquestionably one of the most dominant players of the 80's and a legit 5-tool player. How guys like Kirby Puckett and Phil Rizzuto get in and not the Hawk is beyond me. Take a look at these 3 resumes and explain how Dawson is not in.
Andre Dawson
.279 BA .322 OBP 1373 Runs 2774 Hits 503 2B 438 HR 1591 RBI 314 SB
8 time All Star, Rookie of Year, MVP & 2 2nd place finishes, 8 Gold Gloves
Kirby Puckett
.318 BA .360 OBP 1071 Runs 2304 Hits 414 2B 207 HR 1085 RBI 134 SB
10 time All Star, ALCS MVP, 6 Gold Gloves
Phil Rizzuto
.273 BA .351 OBP 877 Runs 1588 Hits 239 2B 38 HR 563 RBI 149 SB
5 time All Star, MVP & 1 2nd place finish
I think these stats prove my point that Dawson should be in the Hall of Fame. End of Story
